Indian Butter Chicken Recipe

Are you craving for an Indian dish lately? Try this Indian butter chicken recipe. This is so easy to make especially if you already have the ingredients in your pantry. It has the right amount of spice. It’s  also easy to adjust the flavor by changing the ingredients’ measurements.

You can serve this recipe with rice or garlic naan. Enjoy!


Prep Time: 10-15 minutes     Cook Time: 25-30 minutes     Total Time: 35-45 minutes


  • 2 Tablespoons Peanut Oil
  • 1 Shallot, finely chopped or 1 teaspoon finely chopped Onions
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter
  • 2 Teaspoons Lemon
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoon Garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoon Ginger paste
  • 2 Teaspoons Garam Masala
  • 1 Teaspoon Chili Powder
  • 2 Teaspoons Ground Cumin
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 1/4 Cup Yogurt
  • 1/2 Cup Half & Half
  • 3/4 Cup Tomato Paste
  • 1/4 Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
  • 2 Teaspoons Himalayan Salt
  • 2 Teaspoons Black Pepper
  • 1 Lb. Chicken Thighs


  1. In a medium sauce pan, Heat 1 tablespoon peanut oil over medium heat. Saute the shallot, garlic, and ginger paste until soft and translucent
  2. Add the butter, lemon, 1 teaspoon Garam Masala, chili powder, 1 teaspoon cumin, bay leaf, and tomato puree. Stir and cook for 3 minutes
  3. Add the half-and-half, and yogurt and stir. Reduce the heat in between low and medium for 5 minutes
  4. Season with salt and pepper and stir. Reduce the heat to low for 5 minutes
  5. Remove from the heat and set it aside
  6. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon peanut oil over medium heat
  7. Put the chicken thighs and season it with 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, Himalayan salt, black pepper, 1 teaspoon cumin,  and 1 teaspoon Garam Masala
  8. Cook the seasoned chicken thighs for 20-30 minutes
  9. Once the chicken is cooked, reduce the heat in between low and medium heat.
  10. Add the butter sauce into the chicken thighs and stir. Cook for another 5 minutes
  11. Serve with rice

Yields: 1 to 3 servings
